Young people get gold standard health service
Young people in Medway are accessing some of the best health services in the country.
Student health clinics at MidKent College and the Hundred of Hoo school are the first in Medway to be given the gold seal of approval by the Department of Health (DH) for their tailored youth services.
The two clinics have been awarded the DH's prestigious You're Welcome accreditation for providing services that have been specifically designed for and by young people.
Young people up to the age of 20 can receive confidential advice, support and signposting to other services such as counselling, contraception and sexual health, emotional problems, diet and exercise.
There is also support for anyone who wants help to stop smoking or help and advice with drug and alcohol.
They can also make appointments and attend consultations without their parent or carer, unless it is felt they should be involved in their care.
It took each clinic six months to complete their accreditation, during which time they had to demonstrate they provide services that improve accessibility, choice and quality of services for young people.
Medway's Director of Public Health Dr Alison Barnett said: "This is great news and recognises the work and commitment of our services to make it easier for people to get the care they need.
"Young people tell us they want to access health services in a place where they feel comfortable.
"Students at each setting were consulted at each stage of the developing service and continue to shape the service as it grows. Feedback to the students on what is and isn't possible to be done is an important element of You're Welcome and helps to build trust and understanding.
You're Welcome is an important step forward in our work to improve the health of young people."
Students at MidKent College can talk to a nurse at a clinic three times a week on a Monday, Thursday and Friday, from noon to 2pm, while the Hundred of Hoo clinic is open twice a week on Wednesday and Friday.
NHS Medway plans and pays for all NHS healthcare for everyone who lives in Medway.
