Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC) are very reliable methods of contraception because they are long-lasting. They include the injection, implant, and two types of coil called an IUD and IUS.
The four types of LARC are a great way of protecting yourself from unplanned pregnancy, because unlike the pill, you don't have to remember your contraception everyday.
Lots of women use LARC because:
- It can be fitted and forgotten
- It lasts for a long time (different options last from 12 weeks up to five years)
- It is the most reliable way a woman can protect herself from unplanned pregnancy
- The failure rate is less than 1%, making it the most effective contraception available
- It can be stopped without affecting long-term fertility
Find out more about the four different types of LARC you can use:
- Contraceptive injections
- Contraceptive implants
- Intrauterine devices (IUD)
- Intrauterine systems (IUS)
LARC methods do not protect against STIs, so you should always use a condom.
