Gonorrhoea

What is it?

Gonorrhoea is a highly contagious STI. Men are more likely to show symptoms than women. Gonorrhoea is easily passed from one person to another through sexual contact.

What are the symptoms?

  • Unusual discharge from the vagina (or urethra), penis and/or anus
  • Pain when passing urine
  • Pain or bleeding during sex
  • Swelling/soreness around the genitals
  • Lower abdominal pain

If left untreated the infection can cause swelling and pain in joints, plus infertility in both men and women.

How do I get tested?

Visit your GP or find your nearest sexual health clinic using our Find a Service page.

Can it be treated?

Yes, Gonorrhoea can be treated with antibiotics.

How can I prevent it?

Condoms are the only form of contraception to protect you against STIs. You can get free condoms in Medway through the C Card scheme
