Speakeasy
Speakeasy is a FREE, relaxed and informal course aimed at helping parents and carers deal with issues around sex, relationships and growing up.
Children from toddlers to teens will ask questions that might embarrass you as a parent. If you want to be the one to inform your children about relationships, puberty, sex, and keeping safe, then Speakeasy can help you to take control.
Speakeasy can empower you in supporting and accurately educating your children by giving you the tools to provide positive sex and relationships education in the home.
Speakeasy courses are run in a relaxed and open atmosphere, where parents can learn in a flexible way. Sessions run for a few hours per week over an eight-week period.
Jay is a father of three from Gillingham. Like many parents Jay found it difficult to discuss relationships, sex and growing up with his two 12 year old sons and his 11 year old daughter.
To get tips and advice Jay signed up to a Speakeasy course. Having completed the sessions, Jay now feels confident and comfortable to answer any questions his children may have.
Jay comments: "I knew it would be something that should be discussed when the time was right and I wasn't sure about everything. I now feel I am better informed about things that concern teenagers and young people. I would recommend this course to all parents and urge more men to take it too."
Topics include:
- Physical and emotional changes during puberty
- Relationships and sex education in the context of family life
- Social and cultural attitudes towards sex and sexuality
- Peer pressure
- Contraception
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Keeping children and young people safe from harm
- Understanding relationships and sex education in schools, taking account of statutory and non-statutory guidance in education
Speakeasy is a course accredited through the open college network, and on completion of the course you could receive a qualification the equivalent to a GCSE.
